Rebels shut out Knights in semifinal action

Mike Lanteigne picked the ideal time for his first goal of the season.

The Grade 12 midfielder scored with five minutes to go yesterday to help the Eastwood Rebels secure a 2-0 victory over the Bluevale Knights in a Waterloo County semifinal playoff game at Eastwood.

Eastwood will go for its fifth senior boys soccer title in six years tomorrow at Budd Park when it faces the Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders in a rematch of last year's final, which Eastwood won 5-0. The Highlanders, who fell 1-0 to the Rebels during the regular season, earned a spot in the 3:30 p.m. title tilt with a 2-0 win over the Forest Heights Trojans at Budd Park.

"I've been waiting to score a goal all season so that one feels good," said Lanteigne, a hard-working, Grade 12 student in his third and final year with the Rebels.

"It doesn't matter who we play next. We just want to win."
With their wins, Eastwood and SJAM earned automatic berths into next week's Central Western Ontario championship, while Bluevale and Forest Heights will play tomorrow for the right to face Brantford Assumption on Friday. The winner of that game will also advance to CWOSSA, a tournament Bluevale midfielder Danny Leon remains confident his team can win.

"No shots went in today," said Leon, a Grade 11 midfielder who turned in a strong effort for his team.
"We'll practise, we'll communicate and we'll work as a team. We're still going all the way."
The Knights certainly had chances to score yesterday, but a lack of finish did them in.

Mumin Moalim opened the scoring for Eastwood in the 23rd minute when he blasted a close-in strike past Bluevale goalkeeper Scott Robertson. Only a minute earlier, Jim Blake had a chance to put Bluevale ahead, but his header was off target and rolled harmlessly past Eastwood goalkeeper Mike Boyko.
Bluevale had chances after that, but for the most part struggled to get past Eastwood's talented defensive duo of Arish Yousufi and Valton Osdautaj.

Lanteigne's clincher came after the Knights pushed almost everyone forward for a late corner kick and were caught short-handed when the Rebels were able to clear the ball.
"We are like a family out there," said Lanteigne of his close-knit team. "We might not be as big as we were last year, but we still have plenty of talent."

The Rebels also have plenty of heart and pride to go along with that talent and don't want to go into next week's CWOSSA event as anything but Waterloo County champions.

"We'll look forward to the final and want to win WCSSAA before we even think about CWOSSA," said Lanteigne.
"No one wants to go into CWOSSA as the second-place team."

Bryce Reed and Mike Halmo scored for SJAM against Forest Heights, while Adam Cok had the shutout.
Galt and Jacob Hespeler will play for the First Division title tomorrow after wins yesterday.
Darryll Massiah recorded the shutout and Ryan Dixon scored the game's only goal as the Ghosts beat the Preston Panthers 1-0 in one semifinal.

Meanwhile, Jamie Stewart, Weston Atkins and Jon Valencia scored for the Hawks in a 3-1 win over Huron Heights, which received a goal from Ogi Oroz.
